Hi

Really short issue of TNPC this week. I know many of you are
looking forward to a long weekend. You may not even see this
before the holiday weekend. Be sure to visit our new sponsor
above.

I want to say thank you for being a TNPC
subscriber. It means a lot to me. Some of you have been with me
since 1998. That is a very long time in Internet years.

This issue I briefly look at current spam levels and a technical
pointer for those of you wanting to run Internet Explore 7
without losing Internet Explore 6. Most importantly you will
find instructions on entering the next drawing!

I was recently thinking back on how the TNPC newsletter started.
Originally it was a vehicle to promote the books written by T.J.
Lee, Lee Hudspeth, and Dan Butler. Things change over time. T.J.
and Lee have left the writing biz for jobs in the corporate
world. I left the corporate world to join the self employed. The
three of us worked together for close to ten years. We worked
strictly by phone, email, fax, and FedEx. Lee and I met during a
layover at the DFW airport. I tried to meet T.J. once but got
lost in the mountains.

There is much more to that story but it will have to wait.

In addition to T.J. and Lee we have published many articles by
Al Gordon. Al has been very busy with some of the political
campaigns. He has also switched to a Macintosh as his primary
machine. He tells me you will see some articles from him in the
very near future.

So what can you expect next year? More use of teleseminars and
video. I intend to share the resources available with you. You
will see more software reviews. The emphasis is on productivity.
How can you use your computer and other resources to be more
productive? That is our focus for the future.

The first teleseminar was with Dick Ainsworth. Dick is the
author of Typing Trainer, the same program I trained myself on
in the early 90’s. We discussed many things not just typing. My
time has been limited that I haven’t been able to edit the
interview. Look for a pointer to it in a followup email.

I have a personal request. If you or a close family member has
had to deal with scoliosis, or if you have any experience with
can you please drop me a note. I would greatly appreciate it.
You can just reply to this newsletter. Your email will come
directly to me.

First go read our last issue at the blog:

Now to the drawing. This go round I’m giving away some of the
books we have reviewed recently as well as copies of my own
books. To enter the drawing go here:

Answer the survey question and leave your email address. If your
entry is drawn I’ll contact you by email.

*Spam Levels*

Have you seen an increase in the level of unwanted email in your
inbox? Spam is on the rise right now. It’s interesting. I talk
to people who think the number of spam they see is an indication
of how effective their filter is.

In some respects that is true, but don’t be fooled into thinking
your spam filter isn’t working. Spam is coming at a very high
rate right now. The increased numbers may just reflect the
increase number of junk mails being sent. You will see a lull in
the junk soon. Then it will kick up again. Then taper off again.

I don’t track volume directly but see how many items land
in the junk folder each day. The numbers today are two to three
times what I was seeing less than a month ago.

Use the Bayesian based tools I mentioned in a recent issue and
you will soon have your junk email under control.

*Running IE7 and IE6 on a single machine*

Darin P. is one of TNPC’s technical contacts. He tells me
Microsoft has released a virtual PC image so you run Internet
Explorer (IE) 6 and IE 7 on the same machine. This is fortunate
if you need to test different versions of websites, have an
application that only works in IE 6, or have other reasons for
using an older version. You can get the details at the link
below. The details are a bit technical so skip if you don’t like
lots of techie details. Here is the link:

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/11/30/ie6-and-ie7-running-on-a-single-machine.aspx

That’s all - enjoy your weekend! Talk to you next week.

~ Dan

p.s. - I’ve been reading through a nifty book gearing up for the
after Christmas sales and garage sales. It was updated recently.
I asked for a discount and they gave it to you to. I like it a
lot. You will too. Go check it out now:

Just to let you know that some sites are not up to speed for IE-7.
So…The site won’t pull up and it will appear it is not there or is bad.
Hang on to IE-6 for awhile for this reason, if for nothing else.

    Thanks Dan.

That doesn’t surprise me. My advice to people is to drop IE completely and just use Firefox or Opera. I know that isn’t always possible.

I have come to the point that I say don’t trust Microsoft with your data or your security. Their track record speaks for itself.

    Thanks again.
