yeah, and when i get my car serviced and i ask if they realize how nice it'd be to have the windshield cleaned, not so much as to wash the whole car, just that they checked the washers and wipers... they dont get it...

Over the last 3 years, I've worked at Sonic for 2 of them. And I completely agree with everything you just said. As carhops, we were told to only give out a certain amount of condiments per idem in an order unless the customer asks for more. But if the customer asks for more while they're placing their order (being courteous so we won't have to make an extra trip outside), we were told to charge them for it! If a person wants an extra marinara, ranch, honey mustard, or bbq, we had to charge $.15 apiece (i've seen other sonics i haven't worked at charge as much as $.40 apiece). And for an extra side of salad dressing, it's $.50 apiece! Unless the customer requests an obscene amount of condiments that they couldn't possibly use for just the one order, I don't understand why Sonic or it's store's individual owners would want to deny the customers whatever it takes for them to enjoy their food! Personally, I think their food is extremely over-priced in the first place.

The local Taco Bell is exactly the same way. We order 12 tacos and get two to four packets of taco sauce even though we have begun to order the sauce lest they forget to include it again. My son went into the establishment and asked if they were having financial trouble. When told "No, why do you ask?" he replied "Because the price of the taco sauce must make it too expensive to include with a taco."
But the local McDonald's lost my business when I was charged an extra quarter for an extra salad dressing. For the price of the salad I should get a bottle of the stuff, instead they hand me a packet that holds about a tablespoon which isn't enough to cover the top layer of leaves much less anything else!

"On the one hand it is an opportunity to observe service in action." Service? I think you meant "non-service" of "lack of service". My suggestion is, ask for the manager. Tell him/her the problem. It is possible (although it should never happen) that he/she forgot to order in the ketchup. The solution is simple. Just let them know that you are their customer, not to hear tales of woe, but to enjoy eating the way you prefer. I, personally, have never had a problem with Sonic, but you and I don't live in the same area. Good luck on your next adventure. :)
