Hello

Quick issue today covering just a few topics. More in the follow
up tomorrow. First a time sensitive note on the audio video site
I mentioned last week, a pointer to my first web video, how to
get a refund from Microsoft, and some notes on snafus over at
Yahoo Groups.

** Time Sensitive **
I recently told you about Jason James new site that shows you
how to create, edit, and publish your own audio and video
recordings to the Internet. He even shows you how to make sure
lots of people see your videos and gives you an easy way to
count the views.

Many of you expressed interest in the site. You should know he
is raising the price tomorrow 30 March 2007. If you are
interested act today and save yourself some money. I like the
site and use it myself.

I made a short video (one of my first so don’t laugh!) that
gives you a peek inside the private site. You can see that video
here:

*Microsoft Retail Refund Policy:*

Have you purchased a Microsoft product at the store and find
yourself unhappy with it? They have a retail refund policy. You
don’t hear much about it but you may find it useful some day.
Note this policy is for retail purchases and not bulk business
purchases.

I found this helpful page at Microsoft’s web site. It details
how their refund policy for retail purchased products:

http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/productrefund/refund.asp

No guarantees the URL will be good in the future - Microsoft
likes to change their URL’s frequently.

Do you have any experience with this? Comments? Post them on the
blog:

*Yahoo Groups Snafu*

If you subscribe to any Yahoo Groups you know the past few days
have seen *lots* of duplicates coming to your inbox. Thanks for
the heads up on Yahoo! Groups from Susan Frederick of the Taffie
list. Taffie is a mailing list for homeschoolers in Texas.

What is interesting is not just the duplicate emails but changes
to how Yahoo classifies group email as spam. That could
potentially affect you.

Here is Susan’s message:

We don’t use yahoo to run Taffie but know many
homeschoolers use yahoogroups for their lists.

Yahoo managed to break their email and tons of
duplicate messages are posting on those lists. They are
working on it.

You should also be aware of this new “improvement” that
yahoo did (in addition to taking away IFRAMES for the
homepages for groups):

“Group owners, we heard your concerns about spam to the
group-owner email address (groupname-
owner@yahoogroups.com). Now messages identified as spam
sent to the owner address will no longer be delivered.
(So many group owners and moderators complained when we
marked them as spam but still delivered them that we
have decided to drop these messages altogether.)”

What these means is that anything that yahoo thinks is
junk will be discarded, even if it is a real email from
a member and that the owners will no longer be notified
it was even pending. Yahoo has a large amount of false
positives. It’s only gotten worse. For the lists that
leave the default spamguard program on, member messages
won’t make it to the list. It also means that when
potential new members try to contact list owners to
join a group, that their messages may get trashed and
the list owners will never know someone was trying to
contact them. Yea, a real “improvement” there.

I don’t use yahoo to run Taffie (we use Mailman on our
own server), but do help moderate some yahoo lists. On
one of the yahoo lists I help with, before we shut off
the spamguard feature, almost half the messages were
getting flagged as junk when they were not. Since most
homeschool lists are members only and don’t have public
archives, the spamgaurd feature isn’t needed since non-
members can not post anyway. for more about their
filters see this link

That’s all for now! Talk to you soon.
