Fingerprinted for Selling Your Music CD’s?
By DanB | May 8, 2007
Interesting article at ars technica on laws popping up around the U.S. concerning the sale of used music CD’s to Pawn shops and used music stores. It is really a bit depressing. I’m all for avoiding piracy of digital goods but at some point it just gets silly.

TSA Loses Hard Drive…
By DanB | May 5, 2007
Story on how a portable hard drive with information on 100,000 people was gone missing at the TSA.
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070505/D8OTUCJ80.html
How do these things keep happening? And why isn’t the first thing we here something like “Don’t worry. We keep that sort of data encrypted and the chances of an outsider are slim.” Why don’t we hear that? Rather the companies offer to pay for one of year of credit watch or credit protection.
If you have sensitive data on your hard drive do the right thing and keep it encrypted except for when you are actually using the data. It is the right thing to do.

When Urban Legends Become True
By DanB | April 5, 2007
For years emails have been passed around claiming that forwarding email will generate money for your or some popular cause. One of the more popular ones claims that if you forward a message Bill Gates or Microsoft will send you money. You can read more about this at Snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/nothing/billgate.asp
Now it looks like urban legend becomes reality. A new initiative called i’m from Windows Live™ Messenger will share advertising revenue from the conversations you start with various charities.
When I first saw the announcement I thought it was a variation of the urban legend I mentioned above. But this appears legitimate.
This is bringing the Google AdSense model to the masses. Adsense shares advertising revenue with websites in exchange for the website displaying the ad on their site.
So use Windows Live™ Messenger, watch the ads, donate to charity. If that interest you read more by clicking this icon:

Running Outlook 2000 on Microsoft Vista
By DanB | March 31, 2007
When you run Outlook 2000 on Windows Vista you receive the error:
” ERROR OPENING WINDOWS ADDRESS BOOK. UNABLE TO FIND WAB.DLL”
Scott’s Blog has the answer:
Click Here to read Scott’s answer
Use Explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System
Copy wab32.dll and wab32res.dll to C:\Windows\System32
I had to open Explorer in Administrator mode to copy the DLL’s. How do you do that? Hold Ctrl-Shift while clicking in Explorer or the Drive letter you are opening.
If that doesn’t get Outlook 2000 running on your system visite Scott’s blog at the link above for more details.

Microsoft Retail Refund Guidelines
By DanB | March 26, 2007
Have you purchased a Microsoft product at the store and find yourself unhappy with it? They have a retail refund policy. You don’t hear much about it but you may find it useful some day. Note this policy is for retail purchases and not bulk business purchases.
Found this helpful page at Microsoft’s web site. It details how their refund policy for retail purchased products:

No guarantees the URL will be good in the future - Microsoft likes to change their URL’s frequently.

Audio and Video are the current big thing on the Internet.
YouTube, Google Video, personal websites, vacation videos,
sports teams and more. Jason James has put together a really
cool site that teaches you how to create web based audio and
video and how to make money with them if that is what you want
to do. The site has hours of video instruction on how to create,
edit, publish, and promote your videos and audios.
I like this course a lot - you will too. Go take a look now:

Practical Backups
By DanB | March 14, 2007
This recording is from a teleconference on 6:03 PM 8 February 2007. We talked about ways to backup your critical working data. This information is not about keeping a full backup of your system and data. The focus was on ways to have your critical data available quickly when you are unable to access your main computer.
The recording is around 28 minutes and 19 seconds.
Topics included:
- Learn why I chose 6:03 PM instead of 6:30 to have the last teleconference
- How to use Gmail for offline storage
- Experiences of people using online backup storage
- How to store a sensitive file almost in plain site.
- and much more.
This call was prompted by my experience of having my computer crash the night before I went out of town for a one week hospital stay with one of my children. My backup systems allowed me to keep working using a public computer at the hospital.
Have a tip to add? Just leave a comment.
