Hello
It’s cold!. Winter has poured out her fury on many parts of the country. There are many without power in various places. Two of my clients on opposite ends of the country have been without power for some period of time. We have power here, but it is cold. 26 degree to be exact this morning. While that may not be cold to some of you in other places, it rarely reaches that low here in North Central Texas.

Remembering the Floppy Disk
By Al Gordon | January 17, 2007
A major computing milestone passed by not too long ago and no
one noted it: the effective end of the floppy disk.
As computer devices go, the 1.44 MB, 3.5″, double-sided floppy
was a veritable Methuselah. It came into widespread use in
around 1990 (when IBM adopted it for its latest PCs; Apple much

Thoughts on HTML vs Text Email
By Al Gordon | January 10, 2007
An online poll of TNPC Newsletter readers found that by a 4-1 margin you wanted to receive the newsletter in HTML format instead of plain text. Verily, times have changed.
One hates to give away the fact that one is an old fogie, but back in the day when the network of computing enthusiasts who ultimately set this publication in motion were first getting acquainted, we relied on the old CompuServe network. And I do mean the old CompuServe network: not just dialup, not just 2400 baud, but pay-per-minute of use.

Hello
Welcome to the first issue of 2007. Did you make some
resolutions? Set some goals? I wrote an article for another list
of mine called “The Big Three”. I’ve mentioned the big three
here before but it is worth considering. You can read that post
at the blog:
http://www.tnpcnewsletter.com/blog/category/life/
Next the drawing. Alot of people expressed their opinion on HTML
vs. Text for this newsletter. HTML won - by a large margin. The
actual ratio was 80% for and 20% against. So this is the first
issue in HTML again. You will notice it is simple and I promise
to keep it that way. The traditional text version is inside the
email as well, if you prefer that.

How to Lie with Statistics…
By DanB | January 1, 2007
Originally printed in 1954 and now into its umpteen jillionth printing, this timeless classic was reminded to us by TNPCer Mike L. Mark Twain once said there are “lies,” “damned lies,” and “statistics.” This is the book that lays out how facts with figures can be used to pull the wool over your eyes and “prove” a totally biased point. Faster than a crooked roulette wheel Huff points out ways to warp the sample study, trick with the tabulation method, or intrigue with the interview technique. If you ever thought that statistics were being used to prove up is really down (and with elections gearing up here in the USA who hasn’t?) you’ll get a lot out of this book.

Essential Perl 5 For Web Professionals
By DanB | December 3, 2006

Essential Perl 5 for Web Professionals by Micah Brown, Chris Bellew, and Dan Livingston. Published by Prentice Hall.
This small book aims to get you up to speed on using Perl in the context of a web site. It does not assume a prior knowledge of Perl. With this book you could get some simple CGI interactivity on your site.
If you have no familiarity with Perl this would be a good start. I would not use the scripts on a live web site. They need to have security measures put in to avoid malicious users. Security does not appear in the index. That said this is an accessible book and the examples use situations you will recognize.
I think a better general introduction to Perl is Learning Perl by Randal Schwartz.

Be proactive - keep your system safe
TNPC Newsletter
by Dan Butler
21 November 2006
Hello
The Thanksgiving holiday is this week, here in the U.S. and it
will be a short work week for many of you, so this will be a
short letter. This issue has an article with tips on avoiding
viruses and a pointer to a blog post I made on gas prices,
Last week I sent out a special offer on a really good financial
program. That offer expires tomorrow - 22 November 2006. I
received a few emails questioning the program. Is it for real?
Does it really work? Is this really a special offer? Yes it is
for real. Yes it will work for you. Yes the price really will go
up after the deadline. Yes I have used the program myself and it
can help you. If you are interested at all go now and take
advantage of the special:
